Tucker Needs A Home

Beautiful Cocker Spaniel Available for Adoption

Cute Cocker Spaniel Dog PhotoMeet Tucker! An adorable black and white Cocker Spaniel with the cutest little brown eyebrows. He is neutered, house and crate trained, and he LOVES his toys. He loves them in his crate and he loves to carry them around where ever he is! He loves to play fetch. He also loves to go for car rides. He’s just a happy little dog!

We fostered Tucker for about a month. His mom has been out of work for a long time and finally, after running out of extended unemployment benefits, she had to move in with family who originally said “no” to Tucker. So, he bounced around to a different friends and family who would allow him to stay for a week or two at a time. We’ve been renovating a house in our neighborhood, so we took Tucker in as a foster; there, Tucker had lots of time to play fetch and enjoy the outdoors, but a safe home indoors. He got a lot of loving and time to explore the outdoors too.

Tucker’s mom thought she received the miracle all pet lovers hope for; her family said they would let Tucker move back with Mom and see how things went. I provided Mom with articles about transitioning a new dog into a home with existing dog(s). On November 5, I said “goodbye” to Tucker as he happily went HOME with Mom!

Saturday, I messaged Mom to see how the transition was going. She wrote back late Sunday night it had failed; both the family’s dog and two year old son were afraid of Tucker. She feels she had run out of options and had called a lot of rescues who told her they could not help her. She did not contact us. Instead she had taken him to the Plano Animal Shelter on Friday and surrendered him. I found this out late Sunday night and was devastated; we would have taken him back as a foster and helped him find a forever home. Mom is heartbroken too, but she is strapped financially and has no other options. She has just accepted a job that starts at the end of April, but the pay is low and she won’t be able to move out until sometime in August, and may still only be able to afford to rent a room vs. her own place.

I contacted the shelter this morning to see if I could rescue him as a foster (and was hopeful I would find a Rescue to foster Tucker for), but was advised Tucker is currently only available for adoption $80.00. Adoption is not the option for us, we have five dogs, but we could foster him for a few more weeks (we have space until May 2). I personally think when a dog is adopted from a shelter, their bond is instantly strong because they are so thankful for a new home; I really hope someone will read Tucker’s story, see his photos, and go to the shelter to meet this cute fella!

Here is Tucker’s adoption information:

Personality: Tucker is a very happy dog that loves his toys and to play fetch. He likes to bark, but he is food motivated, so can probably learn when it’s appropriate to bark if someone works with him. His bark is not “BARK!-BARK!-BARK!-BARK!-BARK!-BARK!” but more “Ruff! ……… Ruff! ……. Ruff!”

Since he loves his toys so much, he may not get along well with other dogs who might want his toys; for that reason, it may best that Tucker find a home with older children and possibly without dogs. Although an experienced dog owner can probably help introduce Tucker to a family with other dogs. Tell him “it’s time to go to bed, Tucker” and he happily goes into his crate. He potties outside. He was hit by a car when he was young, so he often favors his right paw; it does not slow him down! If you throw his toy, he will fetch and fetch and fetch; he just sometimes runs holding the right paw up.

  1. Tucker turned 5 last week. Here’s his history:

    NAME: Tucker
    DOB: 4/9/2008
    Breed: Cocker Spaniel

    DATE: CONDITION / INCIDENT

7/7/2008 My niece, Sheryl, bought Tucker from a breeder. She got papers on him, but didn’t register him.

    7/12/2008 Roundworms & Sarcoptic Mange

9/16/2008 Neutered; Mild anemia – prescribed Hivite Drops 30 ml.

2/2/2009 Got hit by car. Mid-tibial fracture, left hind leg. Right front, ulnar nerve paralysis. Splinted broken leg.

6/2/2009 Laceration on leg (possibly from barbed wire) and grass burrs embedded in his skin.

9/5/2009 Came to live with me (Susan)! Hooray!!!

My poor little guy!!!!!!!!!!!! He had a rough beginning, but still has his sweet, happy disposition!

    2011 (I don’t remember exact date)
Tucker’s right front paw was curling up more, Dr. Sharp in Plano sent us to a paw specialist at Dallas Diagnostics on Trinity Mills. X-rays showed no additional damage; his ulnar nerve injury from being hit by a car has caused the tendon to tighten. If they cut the tendon to allow the toes to spread out more, it’ll create a new problem – making his paw similar to a person’s flat-foot. Specialist recommended leaving it alone.

  2. If I didn’t already have 3 dogs, I would love to have Tucker..He sounds just like how my peanut was..Oh how she loved to play fetch..
I pray Tucker will get the forever family he needs so very much…

    Sincerely;
    Deb Wy

Why isn’t this dog allowed to be fostered? There’s a woman with Pawsitively Texas that has fostered him before and is willing to do so again. Please let her save his life!

    to me

She never mentioned to me that the dog was from a rescue group. If an animal is given up to us, it is managements’ decision when rescue can be contacted about getting a dog and I was told that this dog is in adoption and is not available to rescue at this time. If this dog was adopted from a rescue group, then they can come back and get the dog and she can foster again for them.

    • Thanks Nelanne; that is what Debbie advised me as well. I fostered Tucker for his owner, Susan, while she searched for work. He was never with a rescue; his owner’s niece originally purchased him from a breeder, then gave to Susan about a year later. When I learned he was surrendered to a shelter, I contacted them to see if I could pull him as a foster and work with one of the DFW rescues that would find his forever home. Since he was never previously with a rescue, there is no rescue to release him to and they prefer to keep him in adoptions. I really hate that he is in a shelter and away from his beloved toys, but I can’t change that as much as I would like to. I’m hopeful that someone that loves a toy-fetching dog will adopt him and play with him daily. He’s a great little dog! Thanks for looking out for him!

  4. HOORAY! I just got off the phone with the Animal Shelter and Tucker has been adopted. And this is only the 3rd day he was available! How awesome is that?! I’m so happy he’s found his new home!

  5. Tucker was definitely popular on Facebook/PawsTexas; this story got 25,456 post views alone. Happy new life, Tucker! May be this truly be your forever home!

  6. I am so glad to hear this. I would take him if I didn’t have a Border Collie at my house that likes his toys and a cat that already doesn’t like the Border Collie. It would not have been a good match. I raised and trained Springer Spaniels, so my heart is with Spaniels. So glad to hear he has a home. This broke my heart!
