The Little Shelter That Could

We all get tired of all the daily, heartbreaking emails of “the lists” from our local shelters and postings on facebook. We beg and plead with them to stop the killing and be No Kill shelters. This is the story of a tiny shelter just outside of Dallas. Sadly, most shelters with this level of staffing and funding would simply be “catch and kill” shelters (which are really more like pounds).  Well, this past winter, great things started happening … volunteers started getting the word out via email, Petfinder and Facebook that there were awesome pets in need of homes. The save rate started increasing. Then the police department took over, a lot of times that might be considered a less than desirable situation but they put someone in charge because his love of animals was so well known. He agreed to take over, but on the condition that it be a no kill shelter as he didn’t want to have to put down healthy animals.

Since November 2010, the tiny shelter in Seagoville, TX has been no kill thanks to Sgt Bailey and the wonderful staff, volunteers, adopters, and rescue groups. We’ve saved pitties that had been used as bait dogs as well as those with mange and injured legs. We believe that everyone deserves a chance and so far the rescue community has come through to help when needed.

But lately Seagoville has been begging for some relief in the form of adopters and fosters but the help just isn’t coming in as fast as it is needed. We need to approach the open admission city no-kill shelters with the same sense of urgency as those that put out euthanasia lists on a regular basis. Please get seagoville in your rotation and start pulling animals from there on a regular basis so they can stay no kill. While the shelter is only officially open on Saturdays from 11-2, they eagerly make appointments with rescue groups and potential adopters to hopefully get more animals moved through. They are phenomenal to work with and now more than ever could really use your help. Seagoville’s no kill status is at grave risk, we need to move 15 dogs and 5 cats by this Tuesday so please email pets@seagoville.us and check out their facebook page of available animals, this is the first time there’s been a “list” at Seagoville in several months. Please help us get them all saved!

The Seagoville shelter is located just 20 min SE of downtown Dallas and we’d be happy to help arrange transport as needed. Volunteers are also needed so we can do more offsite events on Sundays at the Mesquite Petsmart. Join the Seagoville shelter Facebook page or email pets@seagoville.us for more info.  Here’s the link to the animals currently available for adoption as listed on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/?set=a.186785798018438.44269.186781278018890

Thank you for your ongoing support!  We really appreciate all that you do!

  1. Awesome work Seagoville Shelter and a huge thank you to Sgt. Bailey for “loving” all these animals and doing what he can to help them. Many blessings to you – I try and share but worry it is not enough help, maybe one day things will be different for all shelter animals and pound puppies! Again, thank you to Sgt. Bailey for caring so much!
